about

Equal distance.

“L5” is New Tendencies’ follow up to last year’s “Missed Month”, continuing his explorations of abstraction and minimal textures. Driving rhythms devolve into shattered soundscapes and emerge from noise and raw tone.

Inspired by science fiction landscapes and the music that might inhabit them, “L5” takes its name from the Lagrangian orbital position of Freeside, a fictional space habitat from William Gibson’s Neuromancer.

New Tendencies is the ongoing project of musician, artist, and designer Matt Nish-Lapidus. Matt’s work explores sound, place making, technology, abstraction, and transformation across different media and contexts including performance, curation, commercial design, and installation. He is based in Toronto, Canada.

“L5” was recorded live in studio on a variety of modular, home made, and esoteric sound equipment from January to April 2018 in Toronto.
